Frequently Asked Questions

How is GPA calculated?

GPA is calculated by multiplying each course grade point value by the number of credit hours then dividing the total quality points by total credit hours. For example an A (4.0) in a 3 credit course contributes 12 quality points. Divide total quality points by total credit hours to get your GPA.

What is a good GPA?

A GPA of 3.5 or above is generally considered excellent and qualifies for Latin honors at most universities. A 3.0 is good standing. Below 2.0 may put a student on academic probation. Graduate school admission typically requires a 3.0 minimum with competitive programs preferring 3.5 or above.

What does cumulative GPA mean?

Cumulative GPA is your overall GPA across all semesters of study. It combines quality points from every course taken divided by total credit hours attempted. It differs from semester GPA which only reflects one term. Most employers and graduate schools evaluate cumulative GPA.

What is the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?

An unweighted GPA uses a standard 4.0 scale regardless of course difficulty. A weighted GPA gives extra points for honors AP or IB courses — typically 0.5 extra for honors and 1.0 extra for AP. Most colleges recalculate GPA on their own scale when reviewing applications so weighted vs unweighted matters most at the high school level.

What does a W grade mean for GPA?

A W grade (withdrawal) typically does not affect your GPA because it carries no quality points. However withdrawals do appear on your transcript and excessive withdrawals can raise concerns for graduate schools and employers. This calculator excludes W grades from GPA calculation automatically.
